Grace's Story

Hi! I’m Grace Cowan, a 27-year-old from Plainfield, Illinois. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies from Augustana College and am currently pursuing my Master of Business Administration at Austin Peay University. Right now, I work in Human Resources at a commercial construction company, but before that, I served as a Logistics Officer in the U.S. Army.

From a young age, I knew I wanted to lead and help others. My parents were my biggest influence. They’ve always been generous and quick to support anyone who needed it, and that spirit of service stuck with me. In seventh grade, I told them I wanted to join the military. That calling never left me. I was drawn to something bigger than myself, a way to serve my country and grow into a strong, principled leader.

My time in the Army taught me more than I ever expected. I faced moments that tested my integrity, my courage, and my commitment to doing what’s right. There were decisions I had to make that weren’t easy, but I knew my soldiers were watching. They deserved a leader who stood firm in their values. It wasn’t always comfortable, but I learned that being bold doesn’t mean being loud or reckless. It means showing up with strength and clarity, even when it’s hard.

After leaving the Army, I transitioned into the corporate world. It was a shift that’s challenged and inspired me in new ways. Working in HR has given me a front-row seat to the power of people. Everyone brings a unique perspective shaped by their own experiences, and I believe our role as leaders is to nurture that strength. I try to approach every interaction with empathy, curiosity, and the belief that building others up is far more powerful than tearing them down.

If I’ve learned anything so far, it’s this: Be bold. Be bold in your decisions. Trust that you are in the position you’re in for a reason. Leadership takes courage, and courage grows through action. Be brave. Step forward, even when you’re unsure. Bravery is choosing to keep going, even in the face of fear or discomfort. Be brilliant. Let your experience, knowledge, and insight shine. Your perspective matters—share it. Use your brilliance to help others grow, and never underestimate the impact of showing up fully.

Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue growing, both in my career and as a person. I hope to help others find their own path, just like so many mentors have done for me. And if I can leave you with one piece of advice, it’s to own your story. You don’t have to have it all figured out. Just be willing to take the next step with courage and kindness.
